Holophones are mobile telephones that use holographic technology for: data entry through a projected keyboard that is larger than the device itself; and/or displaying images (two or three dimensional) that are larger than the device itself.  One of the greatest challenges in further development of cellphones is the scale of interaction from humans to computers, and vice versa.  With advances in miniaturization of circuitry and imaging systems, cellphones can be made very small.  However, humans have difficulty entering data into miniature keyboards and seeing images on miniature screens.

Holophones will provide a solution to both of these scale limitations.  A holographic keyboard that is many times the size of the phone can be projected onto a flat surface.  Scanning gesture recognition systems can identify the location of human fingers relative to the projected keyboard.   A holographic image that is many times the size of the phone can be projected onto a flat surface such as a wall or, as technology advances, into mid air.  These holographic images will begin as two dimensional, but likely progress toward three dimensionality over time.

Holophones are not yet a commercially-available reality, but research toward the component technologies is underway and Holophones are likely to become a reality in consumer markets by the year 2010.  Holophones.net, in conjunction with Holoforum.com (the holographic technology forum) currently serves informational and limited commercial purposes.  It provides information about how Holophones will work in the future.  You can discuss and learn more about the diverse applications of holographic technology by visiting Holoforum.com.  With respect to commercial purposes, Holophones are not yet available, so you can not buy one.  However, we currently sell “Holophones T-Shirts,” so you can be among the first to promote them to the masses.  Please click on the image below if you would like to find out more about “Holophones T-Shirts.”
